Windham Law Announces Changes

Windham Law, PLC, a Brattleboro law firm established by Richard E. Gale in 1940, closed on December 31, 2021. The four partners have formed new professional practices and Windham Law’s client matters will be handled by the new firms. John C. Mabie and Samuel H. Angell have each opened their own legal practices, while Jonathan D. Secrest and Amelia W.L. Darrow have opened their new law practice together. The new firms were established and began operating on January 1, 2022.

Attorney Mabie’s practice is known as John C. Mabie, PLC. He will continue the general practice of law, and concentrate on litigation and trial practice in civil, family law, and criminal defense matters. He has over 35 years of experience as a trial lawyer and general practitioner. After clerking at the New Hampshire Supreme Court following law school, he practiced in New York City for eight years and since 1994 has practiced in Brattleboro. Attorney Mabie’s practice is located at 45 Linden Street, the former office of Windham Law.

Attorney Angell’s practice is known as Angell Mediation, PLC. Mediation is a process which brings people in difficult situations together in an attempt to reach an agreement without the uncertainty, cost, and delay of the court system. Mr. Angell will provide neutral, confidential assistance to people having domestic relations or other conflicts in a process where individuals retain control over the conflict’s outcome. He will continue to represent his existing clients, but new business matters will be limited to mediating disputes. Angell has over 26 years of experience as a trial lawyer in family law, civil, and probate matters. He practiced in New York State for three years and since 1997 has practiced in Brattleboro. Angell Mediation is located at 45 Linden Street, the former office of Windham Law.

Secrest & Darrow, PLC will continue the well-regarded practices of Jonathan Secrest and Amelia Darrow, assisting clients with trust and estates, probate administration, and long-term planning. As members of the small bar of Vermont Elder Law attorneys, they work with families and individuals to create effective plans, including drafting estate plan documents, counseling on probate avoidance, estate tax planning, and eligibility for long-term care Medicaid. Their new firm is located in Brattleboro at 209 Austine Drive on the Winston Prouty campus. Jonathan and Amelia will continue to work with their past and current clients in southeastern Vermont, nearby New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The four attorneys are excited about their new professional endeavors and look forward to serving clients in the Windham County region for years to come.
